Steven Okazaki, always independent, no dental plan, but set on making his own films. At the start, directed children’s films, then PBS docs. Felt stuck, worked with NHK Japan while volunteering at a needle exchange, which led to a long association with HBO. Never interested in only making serious films, so, when possible, a low-budget comedy, something musical or non-serious would appear.
